Worst lyrics

Not all of these songs came out this year, but they were all played heavily. If I listened to the radio on a more regular basis, this list would probably be about 40 songs long.

1. Kings of Leon - "Sex on Fire"

"My sex is on fire"
Following three great albums, Kings of Leon's breakthrough song is titled after the worst lyric they ever wrote. Coincidence? No, people love terrible shit. That's why Jeff Dunham has fans. Try and write the dumbest thing you can think of, add the word "sex" and you've got a top 40 hit ... which leads us to our next song.

2. Jeremih - "Birthday Sex"

Every lyric in the entire song.
I don't know how to pronounce this grade-A retard's name. I don't know if it's missing a letter, or if I'm just supposed to pronounce it Jer-em-meh. This is one of the more inane hooks of the year, second only to that god forsaken text-speak song lower on this list. Attempting to elevate the most banal of sentiments with melody doesn't distract from the fact that he's singing about almost nothing.

3. Miley Cyrus - "Party in the USA"
"Movin my hips like 'yeah'"
Whats worse, her parents letting (or possibly recommending) her dress like a giant slut in her videos and she's not even seventeen, or that that they let her frog-voice this shit all over American airwaves?

4. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys - "Empire State of Mind"
"Concrete jungle where dreams are made of / There's nothing you can’t do / Now you're in New York!!! / These streets will make you feel brand new / bright lights will inspire you"
This would have sounded hackneyed in a '50s television commercial. That's the best you can come up with Alicia, you corny half-talent? Pop lyrics don't have to be poetry ... but this shit wouldn't even pass in a 12th grade English class. When you are just rhyming cliches, it's not song writing, it's rearranging phrases that have existed in the lexicon for decades. People will still buy (illegally download) this, feel the empty "inspirational" message — watch Oprah — go to bed, wake up and do it all over again the next day.

5. Cage the Elephant - "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked"
"Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked / Money don't grow on trees / I got bills to pay / I got mouths to feed / There ain't nothing in this world for free / I know I can't slow down / I can't hold back..."
I could have included this entire song, but you get the point with just the chorus. Again, like the Keys' hook, there is nary an original idea nor concept buried in this list of cliches. Nothing is more infuriating that hearing meaningless aphorisms delivered with the attitude and swagger of a wannabe rock 'n' roller.

6. Trey Songz ft. Soulja Boy & Gucci Mane - "LOL Smiley Face"
Every lyric in the entire song
Crass consumerism is par for the course in popular music. Pop-rappers like to rhyme about gold and cars and other empty pursuits that wouldn't sound any more or less interesting with or without a beat, and that's expected when they name themselves after clothing labels. But this shit, my god, this shit takes the motherfucking proverbial cake. I get physically angry when I hear the verse about texting on the Blackberry. It's almost as brutal as that Chris Brown (or Neyo or whoever) song (commercial) about double mint gum. Remember in "Demolition Man" (if you weren't born in the '80s you weren't the right age when this came out, if you were born in the '80s it was the best action movie ever when we were about 12) when every one's favorite radio station played nothing but old commercials? We are in an even worse version of that future, we actually listen to new songs written independently (maybe not) with the same intent as commercials — to make plastic crap no one needs sound and look sexy, cool and essential.

7. LMFAO ft. Lil Jon - "Shots"
Every lyric in the entire song
This song is enjoyed equally by all the worst segments of modern society — new haircut guys in clubs, frat brahs, high school girls carrying bottles of Bacardi Razz like a badge of honor, sorostitutes and every idiotic townie at the college bar.

8. Shinedown — "Second Chance"
Every lyric in the entire song, but especially the line "I just saw Haley's Comet" which inexplicably appears repeatedly.
The chorus, "Sometimes goodbye is a second chance," if I'm viewing the music video correctly, means running from your abusive household so your dad can continue to beat the fuck out of your younger siblings while you go onto bigger and better things. That's the "positive" message.
This video has been a favorite of my friends and I all year. The derf-rock singer has mastered the hand-movements seeming to mime-pull the sun in while fighting it off, whist staring into the horizon as the wind blows his hair-hair. Even better than the song's lyrics are the painfully oblivious, earnest and wholly stupid comments 13-years-olds have been leaving under the video on youtube.

A sampling:

FrankieAlcala09 This song was like it was my heart singing I felt so much like this song that I did a dance for my school

C4r1y1996 I feel so bad for that girl. :[I nearly cried...and the ...little brother...she left themm. D:But I see her point of view. This is an awesome song.

SxR4Real I love this song bcuz it kinda relates to almost everyonei no it relates to me bcuz my parents always blame me and get angry at me for no reason and i just want to run away.

2008: The Crappening (updated again on 12/28 I keep remembering things I forgot to add)

I spent a good amount of this year catching up on some of 2006 and 2007's albums that I didn't grab the first time around. 2006, in particular, was an awesome year for music. I finally listened to "The Crane Wife" by The Decemberists, "The Loon" by Tapes n Tapes and "Boys and Girls in America" by the Hold Steady. I also bought "Boxer" by the National, one of '07s best records.

Though it can't compete with the last two years, music fared better than film in 2008, and did do an OK job fulfilling its most useful purpose — distracting me from everything happening outside my front door. Some of my favorite bands released overhyped and underwhelming records (My Morning Jacket, Black Keys, Beck, Kings of Leon) but the year stayed afloat thanks to a handful of promising debuts. In fact, 2008 churned out the best crop of indie freshman in recent memory. Haunting folk by Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver hung like a thick fog, slowing down my daily chores with heavy reverb and timeless harmonies.

Vampire Weekend succeeded in reinventing the wheel, making ska and African rhythms sound fresh 25 years after art-damaged kids and popsters alike turned the same trick.

And, with the year's best singles, MGMT brought danceable Psychedelic glam-rock into dorm rooms everywhere.

Favorite albums:
1. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Youtube video is the track "White Winter Hymnal"

2. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Youtube track is "Cape Cod Kwasa Kwasa"

3. Bon Iver - For Emma, forever ago
Youtube video is "Skinny Love"

4. The Walkmen - You and Me
Youtube video is "In the New Year"

5. Girl Talk - Feed the Animals
Video is "Play Your part (Pt. 1)"

6. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Video is "Time to Pretend"
7. Dr. Dog - Fate
Video is "The Breeze"

8. Deerhunter - Microcastle
Video is "Agoraphobia"

9. Blitzen Trapper - Furr
Video is "Furr"

10. The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
"Solute Your Solution"

11. Black Keys - Attack and Release
"I Got Mine"

12. Ponytail - Ice Cream Spiritual
"Beg Waves"

13. Hold Steady - Stay Positive

Magnetic Fields - Distortion
No Age - Nouns
The Knux - Remind Me in 3 Days

Heralded albums that I could give two shits about:
Hercules and Love Affair - Hercules and Love Affair
Fucked Up - Chemistry of Common Life
Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs
Coldplay - Viva La Vida

FILM

2007, and 2006, were probably the two strongest years of the decade for film. Last year had prestige films actually worthy of prestige in "No Country for Old Men," "There Will be Blood" and Zodiac, a comedy classic in "Superbad" and a good comedy in "Knocked Up."

2006 was worth it of not just for "Children of Men" and "Pan's Labyrinth." Admittedly, I didn't see many of this year's films, spent most of my Netflix que catching up on classic and obscure old movies. But, 2008 did have two of the strongest summer blockbusters in recent memory with "The Dark Knight" and "Wall-E." Other than that, the year was grim.

Favorite films of '08
1. Wall-E
2. The Dark Knight
3. Burn After Reading
4. Tropic Thunder

... and that's it

Best comedy that wasn't Tropic Thunder
Role Models

Biggest surprises
The Bank Job
In Bruges
The Foot Fist Way

Guilty Pleasure
Hitman

End of Summer/Fall music preview (updated)

2008 might not be such a boring year for music after all. Notable self-titled debuts by Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend got the ball rolling and the momentum continued with good releases by the Hold Steady and My Morning Jacket. Even with that, the year hasn't been as strong as 2007. Maybe a few of this fall's new discs can change that.

August 19
Ra Ra Riot - The Rhumb Line
I haven't made my mind up about this group yet. They have been getting some buzz from the blogs and music magazines. It sounds a little generic, but they do incorporate a smorgasbord of noises - violins, synth sirens and acoustic guitars. "A Manner to Act RAC mix" is catchy, sounds a lot like Vampire Weekend, but not all the songs do.

You can listen to tracks on their myspace page here:

September 9

Okkervil River - The Stand Ins
Okkervil River isn't just another one of the innumerable indie rock bands littering the Austin, Texas landscape. Released last year, "The Stage Names" introduced me to the band and their sneaky-clever lyrics, gloomy lead singer and surprising guitar. They are a happy middle ground between the Arcade Fire's all-of-the-universe-in-a-pop-song-sound and Spoon's economic perfection.

Ray LaMontagne - Gossip in the Grain

Ray's sandpaper voice goes great with the conventional acoustic guitar and soul-flavored folk he's been peddling for a while now. I only have one of his discs, "Trouble," but I think I will get this new one, if not just for the strength of that album's title track.

September 23
Kings of Leon - Only By the Night
In 2007 the brothers Followill continued to smooth out their raunchy southern rock on "Because of the Times" with (gasp!) 7 minute songs and bass lines reminiscent of U2.
The band is starting to write songs about things other than fucking groupies, not fucking groupies or thinking about fucking groupies.
You can hear two tracks off the new disc here:

http://www.kingsofleon.com/

The sound is becoming a little more conventional with each release. Caleb Followill's previously inaudible squawk/scream sing might actually be based on the English language after all.

Cold War Kids - Loyalty to Loyalty
Critics love to comment how the Cold War Kids have some blues in their sound, likely because so much indie rock is so fucking white. But, there's probably more blues in concept than in execution. You can tell these guys like the blues, but this is not a White Stripes or Black Keys garage-blooze band. Honestly, they sound like another bunch of guys who likes Spoon as much as the rest of us, and that's ok. "Loyalty to Loyalty" is the follow up to the debut that featured "Hang Me Out to Dry," one of the better songs of '06.

You can hear "Something is Not Right With Me," the first single off the new album at the band's myspace:

or download the mp3 here: http://coldwarkids.com/

Old Crow Medicine Show - Tennessee Pusher
Another release by the buckets-of-gloom/fun blue-grass outfit.

October 6
Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul
The seventh album from the Brit-pop group.

October 14
Q-Tip - The Renaissance
Former Tribe Called Quest emcee's latest release.

October 28
Deerhunter - Microcastle
Deerhunter is wild. Fans of Animal Collective and Panda Bear need only apply. Cole Alexander of the Black Lips has a guest turn on a track named "Saved by Old Times."

Many of the new tracks are available here:

http://www.myspace.com/deerhunter

The songs feel less ambient, more straightforward than 2007's "Cryptograms."

Other fall releases:

Mogwai, Metallica, Gym Class Heroes, Of Montreal, Keane, AC/DC, Ben Folds, Travis, Rise Against, TI, Nelly, T-Pain, The Game, Missy Elliot, Sixpence None the Richer (haha), The Verve, Young Jeezy, Calexico, The Cure, Blessid Union of Souls (haha), Pink, Plain White Ts

An Album for Every Year

This is an interesting excercise that has been making the blog circles. Pick the best album from every year you have been alive. The 2000s and '90s were easy.
But my '80s music knowledge is pretty spotty. I know the albums by my favorite groups and the pop and new wave singles, but as for what was then called "College rock" I don't know more than few songs by The Jesus and Mary Chain, Cure, Smiths, Pogues, Nick Cave, Pixies, Husker Du, etc. Same goes with some of the critically acclaimed pop artists like Prince and Paul Simon, who supposedly have solid albums to back up the singles. I only have two ears, and it takes plenty of energy keeping up with all the new stuff, let alone continue to educate my self on the '80s.
If only I could write this list going back to the 70s and 60s, I could have a more informed selection.
