Is it wrong that I'm going to wait til it drops in stores before I listen to it? IS that too pretentious?
no, not pretentious. Perhaps it makes you an optimist. I do that for albums I'm really excited for, so I can have the whole experience of going to the store, unwrapping it, putting in the stereo, enjoying it at full blast while looking at the artwork, reading the liner notes, etc.
